Welcome to two minute tech talk. I’m Lindsay and today we’re talking portals.
One of the most common questions we get is: Are portals right for me? And at the end of the day, it really comes down to: what do you really want out of your machine? Portals serve as two primary functions: a lift kit and a gear reduction kit.
They have lots of side benefits like if you run bigger tires, you don’t have to worry about losing power. They take a lot of stress off of your drivetrain and they’re super low maintenance.
But at the end of the day, if you’re in the market for a big lift kit, a gear reduction kit, or both, then portals are likely a great option for you.
So what do portals do, and how does a gear reduction work? All the magic happens in this aluminum housing. We start with your drive axle and through three internal gears, lower your gear ratio through the new output shaft. If you go with a 4″, you’re going to get a 30% reduction. If you go with the 6″, you’re going to get a 45% reduction.
So, can a non-mechanical person install portals? Absolutely. Each gear box comes preassembled and ready to install when it ships from SuperATV.
So here’s a quick breakdown. Remove your wheels and tires, and then you’re going to replace your hubs with new portal mounting brackets. Install the portals and start putting everything back together. If you run into problems, it’s likely going to be when you’re bleeding your brake lines. If it happens and you can’t get it figured out, call our tech team. We’ll be happy to guide you through it.
So the big question is: Do you go with the 4″ portal or the 6″ portal? There’s no right or wrong answer. When making your decision, you’ve got three main factors to consider.
