Why Tire Condition Matters for Every Ride

You aren’t riding very far without tires, and you aren’t going to ride very well with tires that are too old or low-quality to stand up to where you want to go. Tires are critical for traction, impacting your machine’s handling and your safety—it’s easy to lose control and crash if you’re riding on bald tires. No matter your favorite terrain, a quality set of high-performance tires is crucial if you want to ride your best and stay safe.

So, you know your UTV’s or ATV’s tires are important for performance, but how do you know when to replace them? Unfortunately, there is no set time period or mileage limit on off-roading tires. Depending on what type of terrain you stick to and how often you ride, your tires can last anywhere from a year to five years (or longer). Since time isn’t a good gauge, we’ve put together a few signs to keep an eye on.

4 Key Signs Your UTV or ATV Tires Need to Be Replaced

1. Cracks or Punctures in the Rubber

Visible wear and tear is one of the most obvious signs of a bad tire. We recommend conducting a pre-ride inspection every time you take your rig out. Here are some specific things to look for:

  • Punctures in the rubber
  • Cracks in the sidewall or between treads
  • Bald spots
  • Worn or missing tread lugs
  • Dry rot

If these structural issues go unaddressed, they can lead to severely reduced performance or even blowouts during a ride.

2. Vibration or Wobbling on the Trail

If you notice any new or unusual vibration when riding, it could be a sign of uneven wear or internal ply separation pushing pressurized air against the tire rubber and causing it to wobble. Vibration can sometimes be fixed by rotating your tires, but if the vibration is still there, odds are one of these two issues is the culprit and it’s time for new treads.

3. Strange Noises While Riding

There are a couple of noises to keep an ear out for as you ride. A constant humming sound that changes at different speeds could signify a chopped thread. Another weird noise to listen for is a thumping sound, which might indicate your tire has a flat spot. Both of these sounds are often early warning signs of oncoming tire failure. If you hear either, inspect your tires for chopped threads of flat spots—if you find them, it’s time for replacement tires.

4. Bald or Worn-Down Treads

Tires are considered balding when there is little to no tread pattern left. Riding on bald or worn tires is dangerous because of the lack of traction. The grooves in your tires are there to allow water and debris to escape from the tread, but when there is no tread you can end up sliding, hydroplaning, or spinning out of control—or all three. Obviously, this is not only bad performance on your ride, but it also poses a significant safety risk, so replace bald or worn tires as quickly as you can.

Tips to Make Your UTV and ATV Tires Last Longer

Buying and mounting new tires is a pain in the butt (and the wallet), but it’s inevitable. However, you can get more out of your tires and extend their service life so you have to replace them less often.

  1. Conduct regular pre-ride inspections. We may sound like a broken record, but a pre-ride check is a great way to catch minor issues before they become major problems.
  2. Run your tires at the correct inflation. Over- or under-inflation can lead to uneven weight distribution and cause certain parts of the tire to wear more quickly than others.
  3. Rotate your tires regularly. This helps to even out tread wear.
  4. Keep your tires out of the sun when you’re not riding. Direct sunlight is the main cause of dry rot and tire cracks.
  5. Give your tires a good washing at least once a month and use a tire protectant to fight back against those harmful UV rays.
  6. Don’t overload your rig. Be mindful of your machine’s weight limit and don’t make your tires work harder than they have to.
  7. Use the right sized tires. Running tires that are too large can cause them to rub against your frame and wear out more quickly.
  8. Match your tires to your terrain. If you have specialized tires, only use them on that specific terrain. You’ll get better performance and your tires will last longer.
  9. Avoid wheelies and donuts. We know, we know—they’re really fun. But they also place a bunch of unnecessary wear on your tires, so don’t make them your go-to trick on every ride.

Proper care and maintenance helps to maximize the life of your ATV tires. It also improves your machine’s performance, so you can be sure you’re getting the most out of each ride.

Choosing the Right Replacement Tires for Your Machine

Getting high-performance tires and keeping them in tip-top shape takes time and money, but it’s worth it if you want a smooth ride and top machine performance. To stretch your investment, opt for a quality set of tires that are suited to your ride style and favorite terrain, whether that’s trails, mud, sand, or rock climbing. Also, keep in mind UTVs and ATVs can wear out tires at different rates—even different makes and models can affect tire longevity. But as long as you keep up on care and maintenance, you can get the best performance for more rides out of your treads.
