Clear Lower Doors—Do They Live up to the Hype?

If you know anything about SuperATV, it’s that we’re innovators. We’re constantly encouraging ourselves to improve upon current products and push the boundaries with new ones. Coming up with new add-ons and accessories that make your ride easier and/or more enjoyable is kind of our thing. And that’s exactly what we did last year with the release of our clear lower doors.

Any time you release something totally unique, you’re bound to have naysayers and doubters. And with good reason—our customers take off-roading pretty seriously, so they have every right to question new products and wonder if they will be worth the investment. So we weren’t surprised that the big question following this particular release was, do clear lower doors live up to the hype?

We’re here to tell you that answer is yes. Yes they do.

Why Do I Need Lower Door Inserts?

Like all of our lower door inserts, these clear lower doors are designed for machines that have quarter doors. Quarter doors are great for keeping your arms inside the vehicle and helping you feel a little more secure, but that big gap at the bottom doesn’t do much to keep your cab and legs free from water, dirt, and other unwanted debris. Lower door inserts are designed to fill that gap and keep the crud out.

Quarter doors like the ones on this Can-Am Maverick X3 look great, but that open space by your feet doesn’t do much in the way of keeping water, mud, and low-hanging branches out of your cab.

Why Make Them Clear?

Initially, the only lower doors we manufactured were made of sturdy aluminum or heavy-duty HDPE. Both of these materials are ultra strong and definitely up to the test no matter where you ride. But then we started thinking, what would it be like to see through those lower inserts and be able to visualize your exact tire placement at all times? That’s why we decided to play around with polycarbonate lower doors and, as it turns out, that was a great idea.

Clear lower doors allow you to see where your tires hit the ground every single time. Unlike standard aluminum or plastic door inserts, clear doors allow you to spot rough patches or tricky terrain before you’re in the middle of it. Whether you’re navigating rock gardens or creek beds, having enough visibility for exact tire placement makes a world of a difference. Our clear lower door inserts remove the guesswork so you know exactly where your tire is at all times.

Something else that sets our clear lower doors apart is the bulb seal that goes around the edges. It prevents vibration and does a better job sealing those doors up, so you don’t have to worry about water or dust sneaking its way into your cab while you’re on the go.

Are They Hard Coated?

In case you haven’t heard, polycarbonate is really, really strong. We’re talking 250 times stronger than glass. When it comes to brute strength and protection for your side-by-side, it’s hard to beat polycarbonate. So if you wanted hard coating to boost the integrity of these doors, no need—poly’s got you covered.

As far as scratches go, we didn’t overlook that factor. We put these clear doors through tons of real-world testing scenarios and realized pretty quickly that hard coating wasn’t really necessary. Even after accumulating miles of wear and abuse, scratches were kept to a minimum and our visibility wasn’t affected at all.

How Do You Keep These Things Clean?

Another concern we heard from doubters is that while these doors may look nice and clear when you first install them, they’re not going to stay that way for long. Some of you expressed the concern that one mud hole would be enough to do them in, and after that, what’s the point of making them clear?

But like we said, we put these doors through some serious testing in all kinds of conditions and quickly realized that a little bit of mud (or a lot) is no match for them. Even when smeared with mud and God knows what else, we’ve got way more visibility than we’d have with standard doors. And we’d much rather have that mud stuck on our clear lower doors than covering the floor of our cab.

And heck, if all else fails and you really need to clear them off ASAP, just find the closest creek and take your machine for a dip. We’ve found that works wonders.
