Gen 2 Portals Are Gonna Change the Way You Wheel

Update: Gen 3 GDP Portal Gear Lifts are out now! They take Gen 2’s improvements and make them even better with billet aluminum housings, different gear reduction options, and more. Check out Gen 3 GDP Portal Gear Lifts.

That’s right. We’ve taken everything we’ve learned about portal gear lifts since we first released them in 2015 and made new, better, stronger portals. They were already great, but now they’re even greater. Here’s what’s new in our Gen 2 portals.

Portal Drive Shafts

Let’s start with the most significant change: the drive shafts. We’ve seriously beefed these things up. The thread pitch has been increased from M20 to M30, so you also get beefier castle nuts and a socket to fit them. The cotter pin has been increased from 3 mm to 4-3/4 mm. Overall, the diameter of the shaft has been increased by a whopping 30%.

These things are tough. They’re so tough that they even stall our breaker machine. That’s the same breaker that was able to break our Gen 1 shafts and every axle we’ve ever put in it. We are 100% certain that they are built for battle.

Wheel Hubs

Check out the Gen 1 hubs on the left and the Gen 2 hubs on the right. The Gen 2 hubs are thicker and stronger, but do you see the taller section in the middle? That’s the key to less wear and more reliable performance.

With larger drive shafts come new wheel hubs. The hub plate itself is 4 mm thicker, and the design has changed to eliminate the need for a separate tapered washer (the taper is built right in as you can see in the picture above). The taper keeps your portal drive shafts locked in place so you don’t develop a wobble or rattle, and it keeps wear and tear on all of your portal gear lift parts to a minimum.

Portal Lid

The portal lid has been improved as well. Previously, we made these lids with some honeycomb features that reduced weight. Now we’re making them as a solid piece of aluminum for increased strength.

The Gen 1 lid is on the left and the Gen 2 lid is on the right. Filling in those spaces with more material adds a negligible amount of weight but a huge amount of strength. The lid bears the brunt of the intense gear forces that are generated under a heavy torque load.

Caliper Mounting Plates

Our new plates are thicker and made of steel. You won’t be able to break these things without some insanely gnarly riding. Our old aluminum plates were nice and light, but didn’t always stand up to the big builds and rough trails. Our steel plates will stand up to anything—even with the weight reducing cutout.

Hey Josh, thanks for reading! While it may shave a few MPH off your top end, you make up for it in your low end. Getting faster acceleration off the line or out of a corner is key, and is just what you get with gear reduction in these GDP portal lifts. You can also compensate for some top end loss with a clutch kit and/or ECU tune. Tire size with each gear reduction option will also play a factor.
