Here’s Why You Need SpeedDoctor to Correct Your Speedometer

Speedometer correction is serious business. That’s why we’re talking about how your speedometer can get out of whack, why it matters, and how to fix it.

That’s because nothing’s more annoying than having an unreliable instrument panel. But that’s exactly what bigger tires and a gear reduction do to your UTV’s speedometer.

When you upgrade, your speedometer stops reading correctly. That’s not just frustrating—it can also be dangerous and illegal in some situations.

So let’s look at why speedometer correction matters.

What Makes Your Speedometer Inaccurate?

The reason your speedometer reads wrong isn’t because of some defect or damage. It’s because you’ve changed something about your machine.

Bigger Tires

Changing your tire size is the main thing that messes up your speedometer (and probably the reason you’re reading this right now).

When you upgrade to bigger tires, you travel farther with each rotation of the tire than you would with smaller tires. Since your UTV doesn’t know you have bigger tires, it’ll say you’re going slower than your actual speed. This also means that your odometer will tick up slower too.

The opposite happens if you switch to smaller tires. Your speedo will say you’re going faster than your actual speed, and your odometer will tick up faster.

Changing Your Gear Reduction

Changing your gear reduction messes with your speedometer in the same way. If you get lower gears, your UTV will think you’re going faster than you really are. Your odometer will tick up faster than it should too.

It doesn’t matter what form this gear reduction comes in. Whether you’re rocking a transmission gear reduction or a GDP Portal Gear Lift, your speedometer will read wrong.

If you install high gears for a higher top speed, your speedometer will read too low instead.

Why Should You Correct Your Speedometer?

So your speedometer is wrong. So what?

You’re wheeling on off-road trails anyway. And when you’re not, you’re on private fields or open dune parks. It’s more about feeling the speed of your machine than reading it on a dashboard, isn’t it?

Not so fast, buddy.

There are several issues a wonky speedo can cause.

  • First, at most parks and trails, there are actual speed limits in most places. If you’re going too slow, you’ll hold up people behind you. If you’re going too fast, you might get a ticket or a ban.
  • If you have a street-legal machine and ride where UTVs are street-legal, an inaccurate speedometer can get you into trouble for obvious reasons. Don’t be the guy that ruins it for everybody else.
  • Even if the exact speed you’re going isn’t important, your odometer always is. And the longer you ride, the more inaccurate it will be. This can cause you to under- or over-value your UTV when it comes time to resell it. That’s bad either way and could have legal repercussions in some circumstances.

An incorrect speedometer can cause lots of problems in lots of different situations. It’s worth fixing.

How to Use the SpeedDoctor Speedometer Correction Kit

Like we said, using the SpeedDoctor is easy. It plugs into your machine’s wire harness to let you calibrate your dashboard speedometer.

The process to set it up and calibrate it is simple:

  1. Have a passenger (not the driver!) open any GPS speed app on a phone.
  2. Drive your machine at 30 MPH according to the speedometer.
  3. Have your passenger (seriously, not the driver!) note the actual ground speed displayed on the GPS speed app.
  4. Park and turn off the machine.

Then you need to install the SpeedDoctor:

  1. Connect the SpeedDoctor harness to the differential connection. The SpeedDoctor comes with directions on how to find this connection for the machine you buy it for.
  2. Mount the controller, route the harness to the controller and connect them.
  3. Turn the ignition key on to power up the controller.
  4. Hold any button down on the controller for 5 seconds. The display will flash once.
  5. The default value is 30 MPH. Use the buttons on the SpeedDoctor to change the value to the previously noted speed from the GPS speed app.
  6. You’re done!

And that’s all it takes to fix your speedometer and keep your odometer from getting more inaccurate.

It doesn’t take much effort, so get it done and improve your quality of life behind the wheel.
