How’s this for a bad day: You roll up to the dealership with a trailer in tow. You’re sure your dad’s cousin’s old truck you bought can tow whatever you need it to, but when you load up your new side-by-side and hit the gas, it rips your hitch right off. Your new Polaris Ranger XP 1000 is gonna stay new since you can’t haul it with your beat up truck. The moral of the story is you should know how much a side-by-side weighs before you commit.
Unfortunately, side-by-side manufacturers don’t always go out of their way to make this information easily accessible. Some companies only provide dry weight, which doesn’t give you all the information you need.
We’re going to look through at some of the most popular vehicles and their weights, and get to the bottom of dry, wet, curb, and gross weight.
You will likely come across dry, wet, curb, and gross weight in UTV spec sheets. They sound confusing, but they’re really simple. Regardless of which weight you’re looking at, remember that all of these refer to UTVs in their factory configuration. Upgrading parts and adding accessories will change the weight.
Dry weight is a side-by-side’s weight without any fluid or cargo, hence “dry.” This weight is not very useful because a UTV isn’t drivable in this state.
In practice, dry weight is meaningless for riders. You will never use a vehicle at its dry weight. It’s only useful for people transporting brand new, unassembled vehicles. Unfortunately, several manufacturers only supply dry weight.
Wet weight and curb weight mean the same thing. They’re the UTV’s weight in a drivable state with all fluids and oils.
One problem with wet and curb weight is that sometimes it includes the weight of a full tank of gas, and sometimes it doesn’t. A full tank of gas on some machines weighs about 60 pounds, so keep that in mind when researching weights. Either way, it shouldn’t be enough to make or break your toy hauler.
Gross weight is simply the wet weight plus the maximum capacity of your UTV. Gross weight is useful because it tells you the absolute maximum your side-by-side could weigh and if your truck could still pull it in this worst-case-scenario.
Manufacturers don’t usually provide the gross weight for UTVs, but they do usually provide the “payload” of the vehicle. Add that to the wet weight, and you get the gross weight. Easy peasy. That’s exactly what we did to fill out the lists on this page.
Not all UTVs weigh the same. It’s obvious when you think about it. Different engines, suspension, and seating configurations all add up to different weights.
Here’s our list of some of the most common side-by-sides and their stock weights. We left off the 4-seater variants to keep it from being longer than a skid mark in spring. For 4-seat models, you can add 300-400 pounds to the wet weight. The gross weight will remain about the same in most cases.

Youth models are generally a fraction of the weight of their big siblings. In fact, most are small enough to be hauled on the back of a truck without a trailer. Here’s a selection of popular youth UTVs and their weights.
