[0:00] Introduction

Are you looking for a more durable and protective footwell solution for your Honda Rubicon? Or maybe you’re trying to upgrade your ATV to run larger tires safely. In this video, SuperATV walks you through the full installation process of our heavy-duty steel footwells, designed to provide maximum strength, better safety, and compatibility with tires up to 28 inches in diameter.

[0:34] Overview – Why Upgrade to SuperATV Footwells

Braden Adams introduces himself and welcomes viewers back to his garage. Before beginning the installation, he highlights the key advantages of SuperATV’s Honda Rubicon footwells. These footwells are made from 1/8-inch thick steel, offering far more durability than the factory plastic version. They’re built to handle tough terrain—you won’t have to worry about bending, cracking, or piercing them with logs or debris. They also provide added clearance, allowing you to safely run up to 28-inch tires without interference.

[1:11] Step 1 – Remove the Seat and Side Plastics

Begin by removing the seat from your Honda Rubicon. Grab the rear latch, lift upward, and set the seat aside. Next, remove the plastic trim that surrounds the gas tank. Firmly pull it backward, then lift it up and over the brake pedal area. Be sure to repeat this same step on both sides of the machine so that all surrounding plastic panels are free and out of the way.

[1:37] Step 2 – Remove the Factory Footwells

With the plastic panels removed, start unbolting the factory footwells. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 10 mm wrench to remove the two primary mounting bolts. There are six plastic push pins securing the footwell to the machine—three located on the side and three near the front. Use a flathead screwdriver to lift the head of each push pin, then use a push-pin puller tool to remove them cleanly. Supporting the pin from behind will help prevent damage or breakage during removal.

[2:19] Step 3 – Remove the Foot Peg and Loosen Front Push Pins

Next, take a 10 mm socket and remove the metal foot peg from the frame. Then move to the front of the footwell and locate the two additional push pins tucked underneath the fender. One is near the top of the fender and the other closer to the bottom. Carefully remove both. After all fasteners are removed, pull the footwell assembly downward and away from the inner fender. Rotate it to clear the frame and remove it completely in one large piece.

[3:00] Step 4 – Remove the Factory Step Bracket

Now locate the step bracket, which is mounted to the frame with three bolts—two in the rear and one up front. Use a 12 mm wrench and socket to remove the two rear bolts. Loosen the front bolt halfway, then remove it entirely after the others are out. This prevents the bracket from binding and makes extraction easier. Once removed, set the factory bracket aside—it will be replaced by the stronger SuperATV version.

[3:38] Step 5 – Install the Lower Bracket for the New Footwell

Take the SuperATV lower footwell bracket and position it where the factory step bracket was previously installed. Align the mounting holes and slide it into place. Reuse the factory bolts to mount the new bracket, but only snug the hardware lightly at this stage. You’ll want to leave room for minor adjustments during final fitting.

[4:13] Step 6 – Trim the Factory Plastic for Fitment

In order to fit the new steel footwells properly, you’ll need to modify the stock plastic. Using a paint marker, trace a cut line that follows the inner bend contour of the footwell. Continue the line down to the push-pin hole as a reference point. Use a heated blade (such as one warmed with propane or MAP gas) to make a smooth cut. A red-hot blade cuts through plastic cleanly and safely. After cutting, check the piece against your machine to ensure it fits properly.

[5:02] Step 7 – Reinstall the Trimmed Plastic and Rear Footwell Panel

Now take the trimmed plastic and reinstall it on the machine. Then install the rear section of the SuperATV footwell using six M6x16 mm Allen bolts and M6 Nylock nuts. This hardware secures the bottom section of the footwell to the new bracket and frame.

[5:32] Step 8 – Install Spacers and Secure the Midsection

After the lower panel is in place, attach the midsection using M6x20 mm Allen bolts, M6 Nylock nuts, and the provided spacers. Feed each bolt through the footwell panel first, then slide a spacer between the panel and the plastic. Secure the bolt on the opposite side of the plastic with a Nylock nut. In the rear corner, reuse the stock bolt from the factory footwell for a proper fit.

[6:08] Step 9 – Attach the Front Footwell Panel

To secure the front panel of the footwell, use the same M6x16 mm Allen bolts and Nylock nuts that you used for the rear. Line up the holes in the front and rear panels, then bolt them together. Use spacers here as well to maintain a consistent fit. In the front corner, again reuse one of the factory bolts to anchor the footwell securely to the machine.

[6:56] Step 10 – Install the Inner Filler Panel and Foot Peg

Grab the inner filler panel and position it inside the footwell. Use four more M6x16 mm bolts and Nylock nuts to attach it, closing the footwell assembly and creating a fully enclosed protective structure. Then take the SuperATV foot peg and bolt it to the right side using the same M6x16 mm hardware. This peg replaces the factory version and is now secured to the much stronger SuperATV bracket system.

[7:52] Final Step – Reinstall Plastic Panels and Tighten All Hardware

Once all components are installed, reinstall the side plastic panels around the gas tank and snap the seat back into place. After confirming that all parts are aligned, go back and fully tighten every bolt, nut, and bracket. This ensures that your new footwells are secure and trail-ready. The installation is now complete, and your Honda Rubicon is equipped with SuperATV’s heavy-duty steel footwells, offering superior protection and improved clearance for larger tires.
