What’s up guys? Are you looking for more protection on the side of your Can-Am Defender? Well, SuperATV has you covered with our Heavy-Duty Nerf Bars with a step for the Can-Am Defender. Today we’re going to show you how to install them.
[00:42] First, if you have an aftermarket skid plate installed to your machine, you want to remove the one side. We went ahead and removed one of the side panels of the skid plate. With our skid plate, you can remove different portions of it—the OEM one you can’t. If you have an OEM skid plate, you’ll have to drill out some rivets and drop it down enough, so you can get your hands in here.
For demonstration purposes, we like to remove it all, so we can show you the rear. We got it to where we can pull it down to show where you’ll put some hardware in back here.
[01:18] You probably realized we’re working on a Can-Am Defender XMR Edition. If you have an XMR, you want to remove your factory slider. You have a T30 here, a T30 with a 13 mm nut, and some rivets along the bottom. If you have a factory skid plate installed, remove your hardware. Remove, and then remove your slider.
If you have a non-XMR machine, you’ll have this factory lower deflector here. You’ll have to remove this in order to cut this lower portion to fit the nerf bar in.
[01:53] As you can see, this machine is already equipped with our SuperATV Heavy-Duty Nerf Bars. Remove all of your hardware here and drill out two rivets down the bottom on the deflector’s lower portion. You have to cut a notch out large enough to fit the bracket for the nerf bar. On the passenger side, make sure you remove your T20 from here, here, and here. Then we’ll drill our rivets out, which will be right here and here.
Cut a notch out large enough to fit the bracket for the nerf bar. Once your lower deflector is cut, make sure you use the self tappers (in place of the rivets) that you drilled out.
[02:37] To reinstall it on the XMR model, remove this lower bracket that was for the rock slider. In order to do that, you’ll have to remove some plastic. We removed our fender flares, which you can pick them up at SuperATV.
[02:55] Now, we’ll remove the following hardware down through here, this piece of hardware here, and this screw here until we get this panel pulled out enough to remove the hardware that secures this bracket to the frame. Grab hold and remove the side panel.
Once that’s done, you’ll notice three rivets securing your lower bracket for your factory sliders. We’ll want to drill those rivets out. There we go—we drilled out all three rivets. That gives us plenty of room to put our hardware in. Go ahead and reinstall the side panel. Make sure you get it back to how it was.
[03:52] Next, come back to the lower panel on the rear of the machine. There’s a factory indention. We took a paint marker and painted the indention, so it’s easier to show on camera. We’ll get a 2” hole saw. When using the hole saw, make sure your drill bit is lined up in the center of that factory denture. There’s a hole right there for our bolt to go through.
If your machine is equipped with the factory guard/panel, you’ll want to remove all the push pins for this. It’s going to give us more room whenever we’re putting our rear hardware in. Once we remove this panel, we’ll be able to access this hole right here. It will line up with the hole in the plastic we just drilled.
[04:42] Here’s all the hardware we’ll need. You’ll have two short bolts, two Nylocs, one M 8×60, and one M 8×70. The M60 will be used in the rear and this is how it’ll be oriented. You’ll have a big flat washer and a lock washer. The 70 will be used in the front, so it’ll go through the frame like this. Then you’ll have a washer and a nut on the back side.
Now, we’ll take our nerf bar and install it to the machine. Make sure that we line this hole in the front. We’ll start this hardware, and then move to the rear.
[05:22] To lay the nerf bar in position, you’ll pull on this plastic and work it around. In order to line it up, we’ll get one of our short M8s. Once it’s slid through, reach down on the bottom side to start the hardware. Now, we’ll install our center bolt. Make sure the washer is up against the frame and the lock washer is up against the bolt.
Once that’s installed, go ahead and fully tighten all the hardware. Then repeat all the same steps for the opposite side. Reinstall any components you removed.
That’s all there is to install SuperATV’s Heavy-Duty Nerf Bars on this Can-Am Defender. To pick up yours today, be sure to check us out online at SuperATV.com. Thanks for watching and we’ll catch you next time.
