What’s up guys, Braden here with Super ATV. Today, we’re going to be showing you how to change a CV axle boot on a Rhino brand axle. Even though Super ATV’s Rhino brand axles are top-notch, you might find yourself needing to replace a boot due to trail damage or general wear and tear. We’ll walk you through this process using a few simple hand tools.
As you can see, we have two hammers, a pick, our TPE boot band pliers available at superatv.com, and a boot kit. The boot kit includes two band clamps, a snap ring, and a tube of grease. To find the correct boot for your specific axle, locate the part number in the center between the two stickers on the Rhino brand axle and plug it into superatv.com.
We’ve already removed the axle from the machine and clamped it in our vise. We have a special tool to secure the axle without damaging the shaft. If you don’t have this tool, wrap the axle in rags before clamping it in the vise.
Next, grab your boot band pliers. The boot band has two slots for the pliers to fit into. Squeeze the band to release it. If it doesn’t release, use a flathead screwdriver to pry it off. Remove the band and set it aside.
Now, peel back the old boot to expose the grease. This is where it gets messy, so have a rag handy. Start wiping out as much grease as possible. The more grease you remove, the less mess you’ll have. Use the rag to wipe out the inside of the boot and the CV joint thoroughly. This will make the process cleaner and easier.
Super ATV offers two different styles of CVs in Rhino brand axles. This axle is a lift kit axle with a BJ style CV, which is fixed to the shaft with a snap ring or C-clip. To remove the CV from the axle shaft, place a hammer on the CV and use another hammer to strike it off. Avoid using just one hammer to prevent damaging the cage and splines. Always use two hammers for a controlled and safe removal.
Pull the CV out as far as it will go, place the first hammer on the CV, and strike it with the second hammer. Once the CV is off, remove the boot and set it aside. Use a pick to remove the snap ring from the axle shaft and discard it.
Slide the new boot onto the axle shaft and move it out of the way. Take the new snap ring and roll it onto the splines. Clean out as much old grease as possible from the CV. Fill the CV with the new tube of grease provided in the boot kit. Make sure to fill the CV joint thoroughly to ensure proper lubrication and performance.
Reinstall the CV onto the axle shaft by sliding it on and using a hammer to tap it back into place. Ensure the CV is properly seated. Wipe off any excess grease from the boot’s mating surface on the CV. Make sure the boot is properly aligned and free from any twists or folds that could cause issues during reassembly.
Slide the boot onto the CV and ensure it pops over the retaining dimple on the axle shaft. Install the new boot clamps by squeezing them with the boot band pliers until they pop into place. Ensure the boot is secure and doesn’t spin. Check for any gaps or misalignments and adjust as necessary to ensure a tight seal.
For a DOJ style CV, remove the boot clamps and peel back the boot. Locate the retaining clip inside the CV and remove it using a pick. Pull the CV off the axle shaft, being careful with the ball bearings. Clean the CV and cage thoroughly. Make sure to remove all old grease and debris to ensure a clean and efficient reassembly.
Slide the new boot onto the axle shaft and install the new snap ring. Reassemble the CV and cage, ensuring the orientation matches the original. Tap the cage back onto the axle shaft using a 24mm socket. Fill the CV with grease and reattach the CV to the axle. Ensure all components are properly seated and aligned before securing the boot.
Install the new boot clamps, ensuring they are properly seated and secure. If the clamp pops up, carefully tap it down with a screwdriver. Ensure the boot is secure and doesn’t spin. Check for any leaks or misalignments and make final adjustments to ensure a tight and secure fit.
That’s all there is to it to change a CV axle boot on a Rhino brand axle, whether it’s a BJ style or a DOJ style CV. Be sure to check out superatv.com for all your off-roading needs, and don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe. Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you next time.
