Have you ever lost your ignition key or dealt with a faulty ignition switch on your Can-Am Defender? SuperATV offers a reliable and easy-to-install replacement ignition switch that gets you back on the trail fast. In this video, Braden from Grease the Wheels walks you through the complete installation process—from removal to testing and reassembly.
To install the new ignition switch, you’ll need a 25 mm open-end wrench, which fits the retaining nut behind the switch. Braden notes that while many stock switches aren’t very tight, you may also use a pair of pliers to initially loosen the nut. A small flathead screwdriver or pick may also help disconnect the wiring harness if the tab is hard to release.
Begin by getting into the driver’s seat and removing the key from the ignition. Use the 25 mm wrench or your hand to loosen the retaining nut securing the ignition switch to the dash panel. Once the nut is off, gently pull down on the switch panel—the one that houses both the key switch and rocker switches—starting at the bottom and pulling outward. This exposes the back of the ignition switch without needing to completely remove the panel.
Slide the rubber dust boot off the back of the old ignition switch and locate the wiring plug. Press down on the release tab and pull the connector loose. If it’s difficult to remove by hand, use a flathead screwdriver or a pick to press the tab and carefully pry the connector free. Once disconnected, you can fully remove the old ignition switch and set it aside.
Grab your new SuperATV ignition switch. First, remove the nut from the threaded shaft. Leave the rubber grommet in place—it goes on the inside of the dash panel. Plug the new switch into the wiring harness. Before installing it fully, test the key to ensure the new ignition switch works. Once you verify functionality, you’re ready to move forward with securing it in place.
Slide the dust cover back over the new switch. Note the alignment notch on both the switch and the dust cover—these need to match for proper fitment. Push the switch into the opening on the dash panel and align the notch with the panel’s cutout. Once seated, reinstall the nut by hand, then use the wrench to snug it down. Be careful not to overtighten—it’s mounted in plastic and doesn’t need to be cranked down. Now that the ignition switch is installed and secure, push the panel back into place. Start from the top and press downward until it snaps back into position and fits flush with the dash.
Braden shares a helpful tip: keeping a spare ignition switch in your tool kit is a smart move. Ignition failures can happen unexpectedly, and if your switch quits while you’re out riding, you’ll be stranded. A replacement switch is affordable, compact, and easy to install, making it a perfect backup item for your ride pack. Don’t wait until it’s too late—be prepared.
That wraps up the installation of the SuperATV key switch on a Can-Am Defender. This quick upgrade takes just a few minutes and can save your ride in an emergency.
