Why You Need a UTV Windshield

You don’t want to hit the trail without a windshield on your UTV, and it doesn’t matter where or how you ride. A windshield provides general protection from anything on the trail, whether that’s cold air, swarms of bugs, rain, dust, or rocks from your buddy’s rooster tail. You NEED a UTV windshield.

But there are a lot of options out there—figuring out what YOU need can be overwhelming. But don’t panic! We’re gonna break down those options so you can understand how different windshields stack up.

Types of UTV Windshields

From half windshields to full windshields and everything in between, there’s a huge variety of windshields designed for every different need. Let’s look through them to see what you need the most.

Full Windshields

Purpose: A Full UTV Windshield lets you do what you love most in all environments and weather conditions. Freezing rain in your face? Forget about it. Is your cab getting covered in mud? That’s a thing of the past. With a full windshield, you can ride worry-free knowing you’re protected.

A full windshield is great for most riders. You can also get vented full windshields to give yourself some extra airflow if you’re worried about getting too warm.

UTV Windshield Reviews:

“The windshield is awesome. It was super easy to install and is great for stopping the cold breeze on my morning rides.”—Stephanie L.

“This windshield rocks. I knew I wanted something with a vent and not a flip-up. You have to work with the seal, but it gives you a custom-made feeling! I highly recommend it—it fits my 2022 UForce 1000 perfectly!” —Samuel S.

Half Windshields

Purpose: A half windshield manipulates airflow up and over your head for a more comfortable ride. And it helps defuse the wind tunnel created when running a roof while going super fast.

These are perfect for riders in super hot areas. If your ride season is winter, then you probably want a half windshield. They’re ideal for riding in dunes or the desert since the shape of the half windshield deflects sand and dust out of your face without totally closing up your cab. You don’t want to suffocate in the heat, after all.

Perhaps the biggest advantage is that a half windshield protects you without blocking your view. So if the dust is especially clingy on ride day, you won’t have to worry about it sticking to your half windshield.

UTV Windshield Reviews:

“Fitment is fantastic, and this is a sturdy windshield. I’m super pleased with this purchase!”—Brian H.

“This works great for summer when it’s hot and you want just enough breeze to come through. It’s easy to install—good deal, guys. I give it an A+.”—Ray W.

Flip Windshield

Purpose: There’s no need to cancel your riding plans when Mother Nature can’t make up her mind. With a flip windshield, you can ride how you want, regardless of the weather. We have flip up, flip down, and power flip windshields to help you be more versatile.

All these windshields are great for any rider who wants to be ready for anything. The big differences between them come down to convenience. Don’t mind hopping out of your seat to secure your windshield? Go with a flip down windshield. Want vented positions and the ability to open and close it from your cab? Get a flip up.

If you want the easiest-to-use and most versatile of them all, go with a MaxDrive Power Flip windshield. It lets you open and close it (or set it to any vented position in between) with the push of a button.

UTV Windshield Reviews:

“As usual, SATV kills it! This thing is built solid, is very easy to install, and fits like a glove. It fit my cage very snug and tight!”—Chris B.

“Great product! Having the ability to effortlessly drop the windshield at any point is amazing. The quality of this entire product is second-to-none.”—Stone V.

UTV Windshield Material: What’s Best for You

The three most common windshield materials used in the off-roading industry are polycarbonate (strongest), acrylic (stronger), and glass (strong).

Here at SuperATV, we construct all windshields from polycarbonate and glass. Why? Because they’re both top-tier materials and do their different jobs better than acrylic.

Polycarbonate Windshields

The majority of our windshields are constructed of 1/4” polycarbonate. Why? Because it’s 250 times stronger than glass and 25 times stronger than acrylic. It screams “PROTECTION” and is impact-resistant. How do we know? Because we’ve done rigorous testing in our lab and on the trail.

And here’s the thing: even if you do manage to crack it somehow, it won’t shatter like glass or acrylic. It’s the toughest windshield material you can get.

The only downside is that polycarbonate is a little softer than both glass and acrylic, meaning that it scratches more easily. We combat that by using our proprietary hard coating called XR Optic. This invisible coating makes it tougher to scratch so you get a clearer windshield for longer.

If that’s not enough to convince you, here are four reasons why polycarbonate windshields beat acrylic every time.

Don’t forget to check out our polycarbonate windshields to get unbeatable cab protection.

Acrylic Windshields

We don’t make any windshields with acrylic because it’s just not suitable for off-road use.

On the surface, you might think it’s a decent choice: it’s a bit stronger than glass and more scratch resistant than non-coated polycarbonate. But those features just make it bad at everything.

A branch or rock moving fast enough will break an acrylic windshield, and it will shatter into large, dangerous shards that you don’t want flying into your cab. That’s a deal breaker for us already.

But to top it off, it’s not as scratch resistant as glass, so you can’t use windshield wipers without causing some marring and damage to it.

It’s basically a lose-lose material that doesn’t give you any real advantage over glass or polycarbonate.

Glass Windshields

Glass windshields are the most automotive-style windshields you can get for a UTV. The biggest advantage of glass is that it has unbeatable scratch resistance. That means you can run windshield wipers and wash it just like you would any car windshield. It’s easy, and your windshield will remain crystal clear for years longer than any other material.

The downsides of glass are pretty obvious.

First, it’s not as strong as other materials. But all our glass windshields are made with laminated safety glass. You shouldn’t use any glass windshield that’s not. Even though it’s not as tough as acrylic, it’s not as dangerous if it breaks.

Second, glass windshields are heavy, and they need heavy metal frames to support them when installed on a side-by-side.

Even with its downsides, we think the pros of glass outweigh the cons.

Check out our glass windshields for peak scratch resistance.

Glass windshields may not be the toughest option out there, but they are durable. They’ll last for years without showing so much as a scratch, and they can take advantage of windshield wipers that would mar other materials. Photo by SuperATV

Additional Features to Consider When Buying a UTV Windshield

We know you won’t get the most out of your riding experience by slapping a windshield on your rig. That’s why we’ve added an extra line of defense to most of our polycarbonate windshields with our proprietary XR Optic Hard Coating. It’s our special blend that is applied to both sides of the windshield to make it extremely scratch resistant. You’ll be able to tear up the trails without worrying about low-hanging branches or dust marring your poly.

You can also get a light or dark tint to most polycarbonate windshields for a nice glare reduction. This isn’t an applied tint—it’s the tint of the polycarbonate itself. You won’t have to worry about it peeling down the line.

Purpose: Our glass windshields are scratch-resistant and have a wide viewing angle. They’re the perfect solution for dune riding and come equipped with vents for more airflow control inside your cab. They’re all DOT-approved and stamped and come with a wiper or mounting points to add one.

We also know that glass has vulnerabilities, so we’ve also designed a replacement glass windshield kit. You can easily replace your cracked class with lightly-tinted, DOT-approved glass and a locking gasket.
