The Top 7 Things You Should Know about GDP Portals

Portal gear lifts give you an awesome lift kit and gear reduction that’s customizable for all kinds of riders. If you need room for bigger tires and torque to turn them, they give you that in one package, so you can go big.

Here are the top 7 things you should know about GDP Portal Gear Lifts.

1. Gear Reduction

This is half the reason you want GDP Portals. That’s because a big, fat gear reduction can turn massive tires more easily and get you through mud holes and obstacles like nobody’s business. You can choose between a 15% and a 30% gear reduction with 4″ portals and a 30%, 45%, and 60% gear reduction with 6″ portals. Our 8” portals give you a 45%, 60%, or 70% gear reduction. This boosts your torque A LOT. So you can run some big, honkin’ tires and they’ll still feel like stock. This does reduce your top speed a bit, but if you stick to 15%, you’ll likely find the extra punch when you hit the gas is worth the compromise. No matter what gear reduction you go with, that extra torque will make it easier to climb over (or crawl through) all sorts of obstacles.

  • Turns bigger tires with less strain and more torque
  • Multiple reduction options to match your riding style
  • Improves crawling power without killing rideability

2. Precision-Ground Gears

Our gears are what separate the professionals from the imitators. It changes this thing from a good-enough portal to a must-have portal. Our precision-ground 9310 alloy steel gears—and our dual-idler option—make GDP Portals stand out from the crowd. Dual idler gears spread the load to two idler gears instead of one in each portal box. What makes GDP dual idlers so good is the fact that our gears mesh so well, so the load is spread as evenly as possible. Less precision would lead to one gear doing more work than the other. Overall, our gears heat up less, make less noise, and wear less.

  • Precision-ground 9310 alloy gears run cooler, quieter, and last longer
  • Dual-idler design spreads load across more teeth for less wear
  • Delivers smoother power transfer under heavy stress

3. Universal Hub

We made a single wheel hub that’s compatible with 4/110, 4/115, 4/137, and 4/156 wheels. You can put whatever wheels you want on this thing—as long as they’re big enough and have the right offset. The slotted rotors stay cool, so your braking power is high, and the tapered input makes it sit rock solid on the output shaft.

  • Slotted rotors help maintain strong, consistent braking
  • Fits multiple bolt patterns so you can run most UTV wheels
  • Tapered design locks tight to eliminate wobble and wear

You can see the universal hub behind this polycarbonate wheel. It’s the reason why most UTV wheels will work on a portal gear lift. The hub is also specially designed to lock against the output shaft so it doesn’t wobble or wear as quickly as other designs. Photo by SuperATV

4. Heavy-Duty Steel Backing Plates

The backing plates sit between your portal hubs and your suspension. They hold everything together, so they’ve got to be really stinking strong. We make them out of an advanced steel alloy. This isn’t your standard heavy-duty steel—it’s a special steel alloy that has a much better strength-to-weight ratio than carbon steel. It’s even stronger than chromoly, and it makes for a super-tough backbone to the portal boxes.

  • High-strength alloy delivers superior durability
  • Stronger than chromoly for maximum structural support
  • Built to handle heavy riding and impacts

5. Better Portal Boxes

Our portal boxes are available in cast or billet aluminum—it’s your choice. Either way, you get portal boxes that are built with tons of experience. We’ve built and sold hundreds of thousands of these boxes, so we know a thing or two about making them strong. They’re packed with material to reduce weak spots, and they’re set up to maximize oil flow. They are not vented because these boxes don’t need vents—they run cool enough under normal use to keep internal pressure down. We also found that vents tend to become a failure point, especially in mud. That’s no good. Altogether, you get strength where you need it, and it keeps things running cool.

  • Sealed system avoids vent failures in mud and harsh conditions
  • Available in cast or billet aluminum for strength and flexibility
  • Optimized internal design improves oil flow and cooling

Take solid materials and combine them with an awesome design to get tough portal boxes that rock. The backing plates are the strongest part of your suspension, the housings are engineered to last through all kinds of riding, and the rotor plates are precision-ground. Photo by SuperATV

6. Double Angular Contact Bearings

Each portal box uses double angular contact bearings for the output (where the output shaft turns the hub). These bearings are designed to take loads and hits that standard bearings aren’t made for. It’s a first for the industry. A regular bearing would wear quickly or implode due to the weight of the machine. Our bearings are stronger, and they’re just what portals need.

  • Designed to handle heavy loads and hard hits
  • Reduces premature wear compared to standard bearings
  • Keeps portals running more reliably long-term

7. They Come with Everything

As with any kit you buy from SuperATV, we send you everything required to get going. GDP Portals come with brake lines, bolts, castle nuts, plates, steering arms, brake caliper adapters, hubs, rotors, and everything else you can think of that you might need. The only thing you need to buy is a portal gear oil, like Portal Blood.

  • Complete kit includes all components for installation
  • No guesswork—everything is engineered to work together
  • Just add gear oil like Portal Blood.

If not what is the offset and rim size needed in order for the Portal to work on my Honda Pioneer?

Hi, do you have a kit to put the 4″ portals onto a Yamaha Rmax 4 2023? I am looking at purchasing a set of portals that came off of a 2019 Yamaha Wolverine X2. They list the part number as 2627A. Will these be able to fit my unit?

Hi Kole, thanks for reading! I can’t comment on specific models, but we are working on some portals for the ZForce. They’ve not been tried on the 800 yet to confirm fitment. Short answer: maybe!
