Keep Those Ball Joints in One Piece
Your ball joints hold your suspension together. Don’t neglect them, or you’ll end up sidelined on your next big ride.
How to Check for Bad Ball Joints
- Chock your rear wheels and lift the front of your machine.
- Lift your wheel up. If the wheel and spindle move before the A-arms, you’ve got bad ball joints.
- Take the ball joints out and try moving the stud. If it flops around or moves in and out when you pull it, it’s bad.

Drive Belt Problems?
You’re not going anywhere if your drive belt goes up in smoke. So make sure you check your belt regularly and clean out your clutch. Here’s how to do it:
- Remove your belt (you’ll need to use a model-specific tool).
- Check your belt's orientation by looking at the printed arrow or writing—it needs to go back on in the same orientation.
- Clean the dust off your primary and secondary clutches and wipe them clean. You can use brake cleaner if there’s belt residue stuck to the sheave.
- If there are grooves in the sheaves, you’ll need a new clutch.
- Check your belt for glazing (shiny spots on the side caused by slippage), cracks, and protruding fibers. If you see any of these, your performance is already compromised and you’re on your way to a blowout and ruined ride.
